Banbury cross seven times to take double

Match report by Alistair Morrison

Trowbridge’ final home league match brought title chasing Banbury to Doric Park. The Oxfordshire outfit had beaten Trowbridge before Christmas and have an impressive all round side that has troubled most opposition this season. Trowbridge needed to be quick out of the blocks and once again found themselves behind when Banbury scored three converted tries early on to make the score 21-0 in the early stages, but they rallied in the second quarter. The visitors were urged on by their impressive scrum half Ed Phillips and the pick of the forwards was No 8 Jack Turner. Their backs also caused some trouble, but the Trowbridge defence was more resistant than in the previous week. Banbury wing Quinten Blythe, who scored three tries from a long range in the match at Banbury, scored a trade mark try from a distance during the early exchanges. Trowbridge were helped during this period by some handling mistakes from the visitors and a multiple phase attack resulted in Luke Moore forcing his way over for a try with the interval approaching. Ollie Weaver converted. There was time however for the visitors to score again before the break to gain a bonus point for scoring four tries, but this score was not converted. The teams turned around with the score the same as the interval score at Windsor the previous week.

The hosts continued causing problems during the early parts of the second period. There was some interruption when Banbury centre Michael Owen was yellow carded for a high tackle, an offence he repeated late in the game and was red carded for the trouble by the Oxford Society referee who impressed throughout. Trowbridge contributed to an entertaining second half when fly half Jac Stone dummied his way over the line for a try he converted as Weaver had left the field at half time. But the Banbury lead was not threatened an they ran in 3 more tries to help their cause to win the league. However they did not close on leaders Oxford Harlequins as they beat the other leading side Bracknell to possibly clinch the title.

Trowbridge lost fifth place to Witney, who won at Windsor, whilst Chippenham were soundly beaten at Newbury Blues by a 60-7 scoreline. On Saturday, Trowbridge travel to Beaconsfield, who lost heavily at Sherborne. This was an uncharacteristic result, and the Doric Park side will be expecting a challenging match even though they produced an excellent second half performance in December to beat the Buckinghamshire side by 45-7.
