Club stalwart recounts more than 50 years of memories

As the club approaches our 90th anniversary we will be taking the opportunity to catch up with some of our past players and members. This week we caught up with Steve Tregelles who has been a member of the club for over 50 years and for many years a sponsor of the club. Treggy has seen the club grow from the early days at Green Lane through to the successful move to Doric Park so has seen it all over the years and is certainly someone worth listening too.

Your name: Stephen Tregelles (also known as Treggy and White Lightning)

Years with Trowbridge RFC:
Started playing in 1970 aged 16.

Clubs: Trowbridge Colts (founder player), Bath Youth, Dorset & Wilts Colts and Trowbridge 1st XV

Position(s): Winger

Current role at Trowbridge RFC: Avid supporter

Most memorable Trowbridge moment (s):
Whilst playing at Green Lane:
1) When the oil boiler worked, and we were able to have a hot shower.
2) Assisting other club members with the building of the new clubhouse.
3) Checking the rota to see if it was your turn to mark the pitches out, cleaning out the changing rooms, serve behind the bar, prepare the after-match meal or taking the team shirts to the launderette.

Best player you played with at Trowbridge?
Hard to choose one from our threequarters line - Mike Broom, Chas Miller, Ray Williams, Tim Smith, Pete Rose

What do you wish to see from Trowbridge RFC in the future?
Attract more quality players to strengthen the squad, which hopefully would improve the clubs current standing in the league.
Recognition from the current players on the hardships the committee members and players in the 1950’s to 1990’s endured which resulted in the club owning its own land which enabled the land to be sold and fund the building of the fantastic new facilities.

Thank you for your time White Lightening. There are some lovely barnet's in that team photo from 1974! I think that is you front row two to the right of skipper John Sheppard
