TROWBRIDGE 17 MATSON 31
Match report courtesy of Alistair Morrison
Trowbridge’s final match of the season came with the first visit from Champions elect Matson to Doric Park. Trowbridge full back James Davies surprised the visitors after fielding the kick off and setting up a backs move that resulted in centre Olly Shrubb going through a gap and scoring a try which he converted. It took some time for Matson to settle down as the Trowbridge defence held firm until a set move from the Gloucester side resulted in two tries from their forwards in the latter part of the half. The teams turned round with Matson winning 12-7.They continued to press into the second half, when with a combination of set moves in their forwards they pulled away with three more tries to take the score to 31-7.
Trowbridge had their share of the ball and spent some time pressing the Matson line. At one point they were on the Matson line, but excellent defence from the visitors gradually to take play back toward the half way line. But later in the half, the Matson defence was breached with Trowbridge counter attacking well in their backs. Young replacement Matt Simpson finished off a backs move with a try and fly half James MacFarlane who had been probing the Matson defence throughout eventually forced his way through to score with the last move of the match.
This was a creditable performance by the Doric Park side against a well drilled Gloucester side who remain unbeaten during the season. Trowbridge finish seventh in the league and now move to the Papa John Community Cup where they have be drawn to play against Cornish side Truro at home to be played on Saturday 1st April. They also host neighbours Devizes on 6th April in the Bath Combination Cup and the winners move on to play Chippenham, winners in their quarter final match against Combe Down last Thursday.
