Trowbridge RFC 47 – 0 Keynsham RFC

Saturday 13th September, Doric Park

Trowbridge RFC produced a dominant display at Doric Park on Saturday afternoon, running in seven tries without reply to defeat Keynsham RFC 47–0 in front of a vocal home crowd. The result secures back to back victories for Trowbridge, who now climb to third place in the league table after two rounds. It was a performance built on relentless forward power, sharp organisation in defence, and clinical finishing in attack – a statement win that underlined the squad’s intent for the season ahead.

A Fast Start
The blue and golds wasted no time asserting themselves. From the kick off, Trowbridge immediately put Keynsham under pressure, dominating territory and forcing errors with their aggressive line speed. After just five minutes, the deadlock was broken. A solid scrum platform gave scrum-half Will Lennox the chance to release his backs, and full back Alex Kilbane hit a perfect angle, slicing through the visiting defence to crash over the whitewash. The conversion drifted just wide, but the early 5–0 lead reflected Trowbridge’s intent.

Trowbridge thought they had struck again on the ten minute mark when Alex Christopher crossed the line, only for the referee to rule the try out for a forward pass in the build-up. Moments later, Keynsham were forced into some last ditch defence as Trowbridge hammered the line. The away side held firm, when the ball was held up over the line, but the Trowbridge pressure was relentless.

Trowbridge launched straight back onto the attack. Sustained pressure inside the 22 eventually wore the visitors down, and it was powerhouse forward Olly Bilton who forced his way through the traffic in the 13th minute. Fly half Tom Weaver slotted the extras, extending the lead to 12–0.

At the 16 minute mark, a shunt at the scrum allowed scrum half Will Lennox to whip quick ball to Kilbane, who spotted a gap and powered through for his second try of the match. Weaver added the conversion, and Trowbridge were in complete control at 19–0.

The remainder of the first half was a test of patience. Keynsham worked hard to get back into the contest, stringing together phases and testing Trowbridge’s defensive resolve. Yet the blue and gold wall never wavered, with the back row of Rory Murchison, Ben Mallett, and Ryan Lech were cutting down attackers with crunching tackles. When the whistle went for half-time, Trowbridge’s clean sheet remained intact, a reflection of the squad’s collective defensive effort.

Murchison Power and a Flying Start to the Second Half

If the first half belonged to Kilbane, the second was all about Trowbridge’s pack taking control. Just five minutes into the restart, Alex Murchison moved to number 8, having shifted from the centres, made an immediate impact. From the base of an attacking scrum, he picked up cleanly and bulldozed his way past multiple defenders to score under the posts. Weaver’s simple conversion stretched the score to 26–0 and effectively ended the contest.

Trowbridge refused to ease off, however. Their fitness and intensity meant the tempo only increased as the half wore on, while Keynsham struggled to secure clean exits from their own 22.

A Lengthy Build-Up and Chalmers’ Finish

erhaps the try of the match came midway through the second half. After a goal line drop out by Keynsham, Trowbridge patiently went through multiple phases, probing for space and pulling the visitors’ defence from side to side. The breakthrough came when Bilton again showed his athleticism, surging through a tackle and making a line breaks. Spotting the support run, he timed his pass perfectly to release Alex Chalmers, who raced onto the ball and dotted down beneath the uprights. Weaver’s boot did the rest, pushing the scoreline out to 33–0.

Relentless Pressure and a Final Flourish

The final quarter of the match was all about game management. With the result already secure, Trowbridge’s leadership group ensured standards did not slip. The bench made a strong impact, particularly in maintaining the tempo at the breakdown and keeping the defence watertight. The strong defence perhaps resulted in a mispalced pass by Keynsham which centre Alex Murchison managed to hack through before reclaiming the ball and running in for his 2nd try of the afternoon.

Fittingly, Trowbridge had the final say. A late penalty gave Trowbridge prime field position, and once again it was the forwards who provided the killer blow. This time it was Rory Murchison who capitalised on the close range pressure, driving over from short distance to the delight of the Doric Park faithful. Frost coolly slotted the conversion, the referee blew the final whistle, the scoreboard read Trowbridge 47-0 Keynsham

The scoreline told its own story. Trowbridge combined physical dominance with slick handling, while their defensive organisation ensured Keynsham never once broke through. The clean sheet was as pleasing as the seven tries, a clear sign that this side is building a well rounded game capable of challenging any team in the division.

The backline too deserves credit. Kilbane’s early brace set the tone, while the likes of Weaver, Hutt, and Christopher constantly threatened with ball in hand. Lennox, pulling the strings from scrum half, delivered an excellent game in tempo and decision-making.

Man of the Match – Will Lennox
The official Man of the Match, sponsored by Somer Valley Brewing, went to scrum half Will Lennox, who is proudly sponsored this season by The Floor Smith. His sharp service and relentless energy epitomised the team’s performance. Whether marshalling the forwards or linking play with his backs, Lennox ensured that Trowbridge’s attacking momentum never dipped.

Looking Ahead

The victory propels Trowbridge up to third in the league standings, a strong position after two rounds. Momentum is clearly with the squad, but the focus quickly shifts to next weekend’s clash away at Royal Wootton Bassett 2nd XV.

It promises to be a stern test on the road, but with confidence high and competition for places fierce, Trowbridge will head into the fixture determined to extend their unbeaten run.
