TROWBRIDGE 101 SWINDON 5

After their encouraging win at Old Centralians in Gloucester last week, Trowbridge were without key players Ali Frost, Joe Martindale and Kyle Oakley for the visit of Swindon who have not won a league match this season. However able replacements have been available this season. They scored from the kick off when the ball was moved along the back line to wing Ajay Momi who kicked ahead from the 22 metre line and Alex Murchison, who scored the winning try at Gloucester, won the race to touch down in Trowbridge’s first attack. This was soon followed by tries from Ethan Hutt, another try from Murchison and scrum half Will Lennox to gain a bonus point in the first 25 minutes. Swindon’s pack were completing well but they had no answer for the quick movement of the Trowbridge backs. But they did score from a forward drive by an unidentified replacement and Trowbridge conceded penalties at the breakdown. They were also at fault when failing to field more than once at restarts. Before the interval the Doric Park side scored more tries from Lennox, Rory Murchison and a planned throw at the front of the line out when flanker Andrew Twinney gained possession and dived over unopposed. The score was an impressive 49 –5 and Tom Weaver had converted all 7 tries.

The try scoring continued after the break with Ajay Momi won the chase to a speculative kick ahead in the second minute of the half before Rory Murchison kept the scoreboard moving, but this time the conversion was missed. In the 52nd minute James Macfarlane went over and skipper Ethan Hutt broke through the middle to allow Alex Murchison to complete his hat trick. During the latter stages Trowbridge’s discipline deserted them. Hooker Rhys Redman was yellow carded by the Oxfordshire official and Austin Reid followed him to the bin after an ugly confrontation between the sides. Then Ajay Momi was dismissed after he retaliated in an alleged gouging incident. This reduced Trowbridge to twelve players for the last ten minutes but during this period they scored three late tries when first left wing Alex Christopher turned up on the opposite wing to score after an end to end move. This was soon after repeated on the opposite wing with Andrew Twinney getting the touch down and finally, as no side approached and Trowbridge were aiming for a three figure score James MacFarlane scored his second try, when he ran the length of the pitch to score with the last move of the game, so quickly that the video missed the latter stages of his run!. Tom Weaver completed a thirteen conversions score winning the Man of the match award and completing a 100 point score for his side and for the season. The final score was 101-5 and it was Trowbridge’s highest score since the 1990s when they beat Oakmeadians 110-0 in the days when Andy Coxhead was the star of the match. This time the Player of the Match awarded sponsored by Plumbase was awarded to Centre Alex Murchison.

Trowbridge moved up to second behind Wiltshire neighbours Chippenham, who overcame Stow on the Wold, while early leaders Drybrook shared the spoils with a 36 all draw at Longlevens. There are no league matches next week and Trowbridge resume their programme at Doric Park against Witney on 9th November.

Head Coach Ali Lund said "I am full of admiration for the the way Swindon stuck to their task and showed plenty of spirit and endeavor despite suffering injuries through the game and the pressure we put them under. Players and supporters with good memories will remember we were on the receiving end of these type of scores not that long ago and it is not a nice feeling. The challenge for us now is too keep building and improving as we progress through the season. We have had a strong start to the season but there are much tougher tests to come which we will look forward to".
