Despite being starved of success this season since being promoted from Southern Counties, Frome have, although losing, had more promising results against leading teams Bracknell and Oxford Harlequins. They ran both clubs close and Trowbridge should have been wary about this, but there was no sign that this would happen when play was stuck in the Frome 22 for the first fifteen matches. The ball was being thrown around by the Trowbridge backs but they could not breach the home defence. Trowbridge only had a missed kickable penalty to show for this and some handling mistakes. As play progressed the Frome team grew in confidence and Trowbridge became frustrated that there was no breakthrough. When the home side made their first foray into Trowbridge territory, former Trowbridge full back Darrell Thompson kicked a penalty and soon after a converted try after a period of forward pressure and a number of penalties in the danger area. This put them 10 points clear as the interval approached. The choice to keep the ball in the forwards meant that Trowbridge were being starved of possession. Trowbridge scrum half Harrison Wall took a rest for 10 minutes after he had questioned a decision from Referee Wayne Davis, who controlled proceedings well and Trowbridge conceded 20 metres for the trouble. This was just before the interval, but in the last move of the half Trowbridge fly half Jordan Gott slipped a slick pass to centre Nigel Kershaw to go other the line and make the visiting support more optimistic that they might turn the corner in the second half. The try was converted by Ollie Weaver and the interval score of 10-7 slightly flattered the visitors despite them having the benefit of the elements.
The possible change did not happen in the second as the hosts forwards continued to dominate with their team in general and their determined back row were lifted by being roared on by by their partisan supporters. They extended their lead with a deserved converted try soon into the second half, but Trowbridge responded soon after with a try with 10 minutes to go. The Frome forwards continued to influence and from a line out near the half way line with about five minutes to go they conjured a move at the front of the line for their front row to break away to score in the corner. This was no more than they deserved and the game was safe. A Frome supporter declared this was the best they had played all season and the Trowbridge team were left licking their wounds after making too many handling mistakes. Sherborne visit Doric Park next Saturday and Trowbridge need to know that there are no easy games at this level.
