Trowbridge win Bath Combination Cup Semi Final

Trowbridge quest to win some silverware this season stayed on course with a semi-final win over a good Frome side at Doric Park to set up a mouth-watering final on Bath’s recreation ground on May 6th against the winners of the other semi-final between Chippenham RFC and Avon RFC.
Trowbridge kicked off into a stiff breeze putting the visitors under pressure from the start, setting a fast pace the home side moved the ball across the pitch trying to stretch the Frome defence and it was not long before holes started to open up allowing Ashley Chalk in to touch down under the posts giving Lloyd Davis a simple conversion to add the extra two points (7-0). Again Trowbridge attacked from the restart forcing Frome back on the defensive and again the Frome defence struggled to keep the home side out until from the base of a set scrum on the Frome line Trowbridge scrum half Matt Johnson went over to score the second try of the game, the conversion was missed making the score twelve – nil (12-0), making better use of the windy conditions and denying the home side the ball the visitors started to push Trowbridge back deep into their own half but from a turn over and seeing how exposed this left Frome at the back Trowbridge spread the ball wide through the backs Nicky Little breaking several tackles to link up with Ashley Chalk who went in to score his second, the conversion was missed making the score seventeen – nil (17-0) Frome again pushed the home side back in defence and once again Trowbridge tried to attack spreading the ball wide but on this occasion the Frome fly half Peter Hooper intercepted a long pass and ran in to score under the post making for an easy conversion from Dan Arbury to end a good first seventeen – seven (17-7).
From the start of the second half the home side tried to up the pace of the game but were forced to regroup after a good catch and drive from a Frome lineout saw them spread the ball through their backs forcing an overlap from some poor defence from the home side and a try for their winger Matt Warnock, Dan Arbury missed with the conversion bringing the score to seventeen – twelve (17-12), Frome could now see a chance of a victory and grew in confidence taking on Trowbridge in every discipline and started to look the better side but once the home side regained their shape they gradually got back in control forcing Frome to defend until Scott Williams forced his way through the visitors defence to score near the posts Lloyd Davis added the two points, twenty four – twelve (24-12), now into the last minutes of the game with Trowbridge camped on the Frome line looking for one more score and again this time through a rolling maul Scott Williams got his second score of the game, Davis again missed with the conversion to end the game twenty nine – twelve (29-12).
