Almost 15 months since Trowbridge last played a competitive match at Doric Park they ran out comfortable winners against a spirited Oldfield side. The match was played under the new RFU adapted laws meaning there are no scrums and no mauls. This led to an entertaining encounter, despite both sides as expected showing some rustiness, there was plenty of endeavour and free flowing rugby on display in tricky conditions. The match was split into four quarters and it was Oldfield who took the initial ascendancy with Trowbridge feeding off scraps and struggling to maintain possession of the ball, however after a midfield break and fine interplay between back row and centres Captain Max Day finished well under the posts for the opening score. Trowbridge kept their lead for the rest of the match but Oldfield always manged to keep in touch and stopped Trowbridge ever taking complete control of the match.
The Trowbridge side will be pleased that they put some strong phases of play together but will be frustrated that they did not show more fluency and were unable to convert more of the many chances they created. There will also be concern that they conceded 3 tries through lacklustre defence especially with tougher challenges in the next two weeks against Marlborough and Royal Wootton Bassett.
Head Coach Ali Lund said “I really enjoyed watching the boys play and show some of the plans we have been working on in training start to come to fruition. We had 8 players making their 1st XV debuts including two from our U18 Academy side. They all did really well and showed how much it means to represent the club. We may look to make one or two more additions to our 1st and 2nd XV senior squads but we know we have the core group who can take the club forward in a positive direction and performances will improve over time as long as we keep working hard both on and off the field”.
Next Saturday 22nd May Trowbridge 1s & 2s both face Marlborough at Doric Park 2.30pm kick off.
