TROWBRIDGE 17 TOWCESTRIANS 55

This match turned out to be much closer for most of the match than the final score suggests. Towcestrians started the stronger and soon crossed for the games first try, Craig Holton scoring his first of three on the day, converted by James Falvey. Playing with the wind Tows Scott Browne floated a huge touch finder to keep the pressure on, the ball finding big Ben Roe running the angle for the second score, Falvey’s conversion attempt crashing into the post
Errors by Trowbridge, attempting to run the ball into the wind, presented Holton with his second try under the posts converted and Tows were out to a 0-19 lead
Tows failure to use the wind for the rest of the half allowed the Doric Park side when their forwards forced second row Gareth Davis over for his first try from a penalty line out, and this was quickly followed by an excellent individual try from winger James Davies, playing his first match since the season opener. This got the home crowd going and the half finished with the score 10 -19.
With the wind at their backs, Trowbridge who looked the more likely to score and they crossed the whitewash with Henry Turner touching down, converted by Lloyd Davis. The deficit was then just 2 points.
Tows scrum and set piece then came to the fore. They spurned a number of kickable penalties in favour of the scrummage and it paid dividends when James Falvey came into the line from full back to score. After looking vulnerable at 17 – 19 Tows turned the screw and showed the home side why they are the League’s top scorers running in five more tries in the final 15 minutes, first skipper Zac Osborne followed by Alex Chalcraft, Holton for his hat-trick and then Matt Yuill and Liam Wilkinson to leave Trowbridge shell-shocked, in a game well controlled by Swiss exchange referee Yann Benoit, Falvey converting three of the final tries for a final score of 17 – 55
After the game Robbie George, Tows Director of Rugby, praised the whole squad “it’s this time of year that teams get tested with injuries and unavailability, we are lucky to have such a strong second team and once again we were able to call upon another two players to make their debuts, the game itself was pleasing in the way we absorbed a lot of pressure from a very determined team and then changed gear to finish so well, it’s a great credit to the boys fitness levels”. This allowed Tows to keep pace with league leaders Salisbury who also had a bonus point win, with third placed Witney, a further 9 points behind.
Trowbridge are now four points ahead of High Wycombe, with a visit to Maidenhead next week to complete the first half of the season.
