1st Game of the Season

Trowbridge 19 – 37 Chippenham

Chippenham began their season in the style they would have wanted with a six try bonus point win at Doric Park, but the visitor’s had to withstand a defiant Trowbridge side who showed they are more than able to compete at South West One level with the home pack matching the visitor’s although the Chippenham backs seemed faster in thought and deed.

Chippenham opened the scoring after a Trowbridge penalty kick failed to reach touch, the visitor’s ran the ball back into the forwards sucking in the home defence then spreading the ball wide sending winger Hugh Campbell in out wide, Sam Saunders missed the conversion, Chippenham’s second try came shortly after, scrum half Lewis Surry spotting a two on one situation on the blind side and breaking from the base of the scrum to put number eight Bobby Lyons in for a try in the corner, Sam Saunders again missed the conversion, Trowbridge now under pressure started to make mistakes giving away several penalty’s again the visitor’s ran the ball back into the forwards and with a carbon copy of the first try put wing forward Nick Aston in for try number three, Sam Saunders again missing the conversion. Trowbridge finally got on the score board through some powerful forward play forcing Chippenham back over their own line enabling prop Karl Parry to touch down, Lloyd Davis adding the extra two points. Chippenham continued to attack the Trowbridge line piling on the pressure and is was not long before something had to give this time resulting in Ryan Surry scampering in under the posts to give Sam Saunders his easiest shot a goal, centre Bad Doggett finished of the half with a good solo effort making twenty meters through two tackles to touch down near the post Sam Saunders adding the conversion to make the half time score seven/twenty nine.

Trowbridge started the second half at pace and again the home pack showed their power by dominating the visitor’s forwards in scrums and lineouts leading to the next score by the Trowbridge pack driving on over the Chippenham line Sam Edwards got the touch down Lloyd Davis again adding the extra’s. In to the last quarter with the game won for Chippenham and the home side looking to try and reduce the arrears, both sides were giving away penalties. Chippenham’s Sam Saunders added a further three points to their score and Ryan Surry went over for his second but the conversion was missed. The try of the game came from a penalty cross field kick by Lloyd Davis which found Ashley Chalk waiting out wide and was able to score in the corner however the conversion was missed ending the game with scores nineteen/thirty seven (19-37)
