Trowbridge hold on to claim victory

Trowbridge 28 – 26 Grove
Grove’s first trip to Trowbridge ended in defeat after the hosts held their nerve to overcome the visitors by the narrowest of margins, the visitors opened the scoring in the first few minutes thanks to fly half Harry Carr’s jinking run through several tackles to score under the posts making it an easy conversion for centre Henry Day, the hosts responded minutes later after a clearance kick from Trowbridge number ten Lloyd Davis was misjudged by Grove’s full back Huw Lewis allowing Joe Knight and Tom Weaver to run in behind the Grove’s defence sending Weaver in to score Lloyd Davis adding the extra points to bring the scores level at seven points each.
Both sides battled in an even affair and both spurned a number of opportunities with dropped passes at critical times, the host ending their frustration first with a Lloyd Davis penalty to take them three points clear, only for Grove to go further ahead with breakaway try from centre Henry Day and a successful conversion from Harry Carr taking the score to ten points to fourteen in Grove’s favour, the hosts followed up with two penalty goals from Lloyd Davis to put Trowbridge back in front by sixteen points to fourteen at the break.
Grove’s full back Huw Lewis opened the second half scoring with a try that number ten Harry Carr converted putting the visitors in front again by twenty one points to sixteen, but from some good attacking back play. Trowbridge brought the scores level again to twenty one all with a good score from new boy James McLauchlan. Davis missed the conversion, now into the last quarter of the game a Grove once again gained the lead with an unconverted try from replacement Simon Cramp making the scores twenty one points to twenty six, with the hosts now putting the Grove defence under pressure from scrum after scrum on the Grove line something had to give, bringing the scores back level once again with a great try from wing forward Barry Coombs. Davis added the conversion putting the hosts back in front once again twenty eight to twenty six, Grove did have one final chance to snatch victory in the last moments after a penalty was pushed back a further ten yards for indiscipline from the home pack making the kick at goal easier, but the kick went wide giving a much needed win for Trowbridge (28-26).
