Newbury Match Report

In a two horse race Newbury came out on top despite Trowbridge being first past the post to silence the Newbury faithful.

The Trowbridge pack had a great start carrying the ball in a rolling maul almost to the Newbury line in the opening quarter of the game but then managed to lose control allowing Newbury to escape Ashley Chalk intercepted a pass from the counter attack and ran in to score Lloyd Davis adding the extra’s, but it was not long before Newbury struck back with a penalty goal from number ten Ritchie West to make the score three points to seven. Play continued both sides testing each other’s defences until from a poor clearance kick from the visitors lead to an overlap in the backs and a score from number eight Ed Fairbrother and the conversion from Will Clarke to increase the score to ten points to seven, with the home pack now beginning to get on top denying Trowbridge ball and the hosts attacking the visitors defence it was not long before the pressure told Newbury ran in a try a peace from hooker Chris Rowland and wing forward Josh Love both scores converted by Will Clarke making the score twenty seven points to seven at the break.

Trowbridge made the perfect start to the second period forcing the hosts to defend a strong Trowbridge fight back until Adam Sullivan crashed through the Newbury defence to score Lloyd Davis again successful with the conversion to take the score to twenty seven points to fourteen, but just when the game started to swing Trowbridge way the visitors gave the ball away from a line out and were punished for the mistake with a score from the Newbury wing Jamie Futcher, Will Clarke adding two more from the conversion to make the score thirty one points to fourteen, but Trowbridge would not go away and to their credit mounted another series of attacks this time resulting in a maiden score from youngster Shai Bonnick Lloyd Davis was unable to add the extras ending the game with the score thirty one points to nineteen (31-19)
