Maidenhead 14 – 26 Trowbridge

Trowbridge’s first ever experience of a new 3G pitch turned into a successful afternoon running out 14-26 winner’s, from the kick off both sides looked to run the ball through forwards and backs but Maidenhead appeared to have the advantage pinning the visitors back into their own twenty two forcing them to defend, but gradually the Trowbridge pack started to take control forcing their way into the home sides half picking and driving until they were able to spread the ball wide getting an overlap and sending in Adam Sullivan to score out wide. Lloyd Davis was unable to add any extra’s hitting the post with the conversion attempt nil – five to the visitors. From the restart Maidenhead again forced Trowbridge to defend until the constant pressure told and centre Jon Heron forced his way through the Trowbridge defence to score under the posts giving Mike Virgo an easy conversion to make the score seven – five to the home side. With the half time break looming Trowbridge needed to try and get back on level terms. This came from a successful forty metre penalty goal from Lloyd Davis after the home side were caught going off their feet at the break down making the score seven – eight. Not to be out done the home side through a series of penalty’s got themselves back into the Trowbridge twenty two and from a catch and drive lineout hooker Lewis Jones forced his way over the Trowbridge line again Mike Virgo adding the conversion to make the half time score fourteen – eight to Maidenhead.
The second half began with another successful penalty goal from Lloyd Davis making the score fourteen – eleven, both sides now had victory in their sights but the visitors looked the stronger attacking the home defence from all angles and from a poor home defensive kick Trowbridge’s James Davies made a fifty metre run in only to be stopped a metre short of the line but with some quick recycling and a fast pass from Tom Weaver put winger Phil Kilcoyne in to score for the visitors Lloyd Davis making no mistake with the conversion bringing the score to fourteen – eighteen, play continued at pace with both sides looking like they could score at any moment and snatch a victory but when Davis landed another successful penalty to take Trowbridge to fourteen – twenty one, this left Maidenhead needing two scores to win in the last quarter but with three minutes remaining Lloyd Davis shuck off two tackles to make a break down the right wing with Tom Weaver and Phil Kilcoyne in support the three ran in behind the home defence putting Kilcoyne in for a second try securing a Trowbridge win, Davis missed with the conversion and the game ended fourteen – twenty six. (14-26).

Trowbridge have now climbed to 6th place in the league after winning 5 out of their last 6 matches.

The other weekend results brought Chippenham’s first defeat 13-6 at Allington at the hands of Witney, while Swindon went down 25-19 at Reading. Devizes are now looking relegation in the face after losing to the bottom two clubs in consecutive weeks. They were beaten 29-16 at home by Buckingham and are now 17 points from safety. There were also wins for Towcestrians, Windsor and Grove.
