Reading 11- 10 Trowbridge

Due to injuries, availability, and a suspension a different looking Trowbridge travelled to Reading's Holme Park, Dan Phillips starting at two, Dave Martin and Matt Howard moved to six and seven with Dave Finlay covering the nine slot, Adam Sullivan started in the centre and Scott Williams at eight, there was a debut for youngster Josh James and an appearance off the bench from veteran Alistair Lund with Darrell Thompson coming in at full back.
Trowbridge started the stronger forcing the home side to defend but once again falling foul of the referee by giving away two early penalties, taking the pressure off Reading and forcing the visitors back deep into their own half. With both packs trying to test each other the visitors slightly bigger pack held firm and with both sets of backs looking to punch holes in each other’s defence, once again youngster Shai Bonnick continues to impress at centre running into space and breaking tackles, but both defences held firm. Reading did start to look the better side by creating several scoring opportunities and would have had points advantage if not for some poor handling letting Trowbridge off the hook allowing them to kick their way out of defence. Reading were the first to get on the score board through a successful penalty goal from Rob Sweeney making the score 3 – 0 after twenty five minutes play, only for Trowbridge to infringe again just before half time allowing Reading's Rob Sweeney to increase the lead to 6 – 0 at the break.
Reading started the second half at pace looking to increase their lead, but once again the visitors defence held firm with some strong tackling. Dave Martin and Shai Bonnick were again outstanding, and both sides missed a penalty goal. Trowbridge’s Lloyd Davis did get the visitors on the score board at the second attempt making the score 6 -3 midway through the half. The home side again started to attack spreading the ball through their good backs, and eventually creating an overlap sending in wing man Stuart Borthwick to score the first try of the game out wide. Rob Sweeney was unable to add the extras making the score 11 – 3. Into the last quarter, coach Ojomoh made some changes bringing on youngster Josh James for his first start, Lee Fairclough and Alistair Lund. It was Trowbridge’s turn now to apply the pressure forcing the home side to defend until the visitors Lee Fairclough forced his way over the Reading line, Lloyd Davis added the conversion making the score 11 – 10. The home side again were under pressure at this point, and were reduced to fourteen with a yellow card for Steve King, who was adjudged to have entered a ruck from the side, and were further reduced to thirteen with another yellow for Rob Sweeney after a high tackle but they managed to protect their slender lead with some stout defence to end the game eleven points to ten (11- 10 ).
