Heads held high after Battle at Wells

Match report by Wendy Baker-Mitchell

Following a last minute change of location the Under 15’s travelled away to Wells for the last game of their 2014/15season. A 24 strong man squad arrived prepared to take on the morning’s challenge, under clear April skies.
Trowbridge kicked off the game which was gathered successfully by Wells. Excellent tackles during the initial exchanges from Sam and Lewis were observed. Unfortunately after some good possession, quick recycling and use of width,Wells scored through their winger. In spite of it being a tricky kick the conversion was good.
7-0
Jacob, playing at fullback today, showed some great courage and commitment to tackle Wells’ (stand out player) centre, but in doing so picked up a knock to the face. Max joined the fray to take up position on the wing, whilst Nathan dropped to 15. Again Wells pressured from the restart. During this period some good breakdown work was displayed by the pack andBen.G made an excellent clearance kick. Quick ball at Wells’ scrum, with a good step by their number 10, led to theirsecond try. Again the conversion was good.
14 – 0
Trowbridge, having been penalised for feeding at the scrum, put in some more great covering tackles. Notable hits were made, again from Sam, and Simon - who was also on form today. A great stepping run from Jordan and a penalty for a high tackle led to a period of possession for Trowbridge. Thisgave a glimpse of their potential with some excellent passingbetween Josh.H and Max, who challenged down the wing. Unfortunately the touch line was used to good effect. Wells challenged again in the following period, which led to a 5m scrum: Trowbridge having been seen to carry the ball over their try line. From the scrum Wells scored their third try. The conversion was good.
19 - 0
Trowbridge showed great determination and spirit to stay in the game and following a tap penalty, Phil galloped over the line. Rhys scored the conversion.
19 – 7 at half time
Changes were made at half time with Will, Luke and Sasha taking over at front row. Jack successfully gathered the kick off and made some good ground. After some further exchanges Trowbridge spread the ball along their backs, but unfortunately it was knocked on. At the following scrum Wells were penalised for feeding. Wells were further penalised for a high tackle which led to Phil, who showed superior strength, to run a great line through several tackles to score his second try of the game. The conversion was unsuccessful.
19 – 12
Changes were made in the backs with Jordan.M taking over scrum half duties for Josh.H (who had walked over 30 k for his DofE award in the previous 2 days!) and Ed and Jacob, taking up centre roles. Ben.H and George also joined the game, while Joshua made way for Marcus at second rowrespectively. During this period of the game Wells continued to pressure. Excellent covering tackles were made byJordan.M, who showed great commitment and technique to successfully tackle opposition twice his size! An unfortunateTrowbridge knock on gave way to a pick up by Wells who scored, this time the conversion was missed.
24 – 12
Trowbridge showed some indecision at an ensuing penalty and a juggling interception was picked up by Wells and scored. The conversion was good.
31 – 12
At the restart Rhys put in an excellent kick which bounced just inside the corner flag. Wells used a good clearing kick from their line out which was gathered well by Nathan. Trowbridge couldn’t capitalise on the broken field and were well defended. Lewis put excellent pressure on Wells’ scrum half at the next breakdown, and the ball was thrown intotouch. However this signalled the end of the game.
31 – 12 Final Score
Credit has to be given to Wells for their well-drilled and spatially aware set of backs from which every score was generated, in spite of some brilliant Trowbridge covertackling.
Trowbridge under 15’s have developed and progressed massively this season, and as a parent (and supporter) it has been a pleasure to see the growth and increased confidence in you all - not just as a team but on an individual basis as well. May it continue long into next season and beyond, and pleasedon’t allow today’s result to diminish your hard work and success.
